Basil is one of the most popular, beloved fragrant Mediterranean plants, cultivated both as a culinary and an ornamental aromatic plant. It's one of the essential herbs every kitchen should have, also known as Saint Joseph's herb, with dozens of varieties. Basil is an aromatic shrub that grows in spring and produces white and purple flowers, curly, small or broad leaves (depending on the variety), and is widely used as a culinary herb and, more rarely, as an infusion. The basil plant gives off a pleasant, lush, fine, cool aroma with strong aromatic intensity and is used in many Mediterranean recipes, especially tomato-based ones.

Basil is used in pesto, pies, meatballs, burgers, stuffed peppers and tomatoes, red sauces, stuffed vine leaves, and dishes in tomato sauce.
